Chief Inspector-Consolidated salary of £567 per annum, to be further reduced to £564 per annum from 1st July, 1927 (retired pay being withheld during period of appointment in the R.M. Police).

In the absence of service accommodation Lodging Allowance is payable, but Marriage and Victualling allowances are not payable. Equipment allowance is payable to Chief Inspectors on appointment, and Inspectors, Sergeants, and Constables receive a free issue of kit on enlistment and thereafter Kit Upkeep allowance, which is at present fixed at 3d. per diem.

Gratuities are payable on retirement or discharge from the Marine Police, but service in this Force does not count towards increase of Marine retired pay or pension.

A contribution based on the numbers of employees and extent of occupation is paid to the War Department in respect of War Office Constabulary employed at Woolwich Arsenal.

The undermentioned Contributions towards cost of Police are payable by the War Department :

Bull Point, 33 per cent. of the gross charge. Chatham (Gun Wharf), 50 per cent. of the gross charge. These contributions are credited under Subhead M. Appropriations in Aid.

This Subhead has been rearranged. The provision for 1926 has been reallocated for comparative purposes. (a) Of this total 8,000! is for Experimental Work, and 65,0001, is in respect of repayment services.

(b) The rates and scales of pay shown in brackets (except where shown as inclusive) carry an addition in respect

of Cost of Living Bonus payable in accordance with the scheme set out in Appendix No. 13.

The money provision for each item represents the total remuneration including bonus where payable.

(c) These appointments are held by Naval or Royal Marine Officers, some of whom are on the Retired List.

(d) These scales were reduced by 5 per cent. on the ist July 1924 and a further reduction to 6 per cent will be made on the 1st July 1927.

(e) Borne on Ships' Books and in receipt of Naval Pay and Allowances.

(f) Some of these are on Naval Full Pay and Allowances.

EXPLANATION OF DIFFERENCE.

I-SMALL ARMS, TORPEDO

AND CORDITE MATERIALS, MAINTENANCE OF VESSELS, AND MISCELLANEOUS.

Subhead I. provides for the manufacture, purchase, repair and alteration of all small arms, accoutrements, intrenching implements, pioneer tools, anti-gas apparatus, side arms, tools-examining ordnance, instructional appliances, ammunition boxes, miscellaneous magazine stores and fireworks, and for fuel, oil, furniture, clothing, rolling stock, and miscellaneous stores for the upkeep and maintenance of Naval Armament, Torpedo and Mining Depots, and for Naval Armament Vessels at Home and Abroad. It also provides for the purchase of material required for the manufacture of cordite at Holton Heath Factory, and for material required for the manufacture of torpedoes at Greenock Factory. The cost of construction and repair of Naval Armament Vessels is charged to this Subhead, but Departmental labour on such repairs is charged to Subhead B.

Due to increased provision for Torpedo material for New Construction, Anti-gas Apparatus and Naval Armament Vessels, and for Coal to replace reserve stocks.

K.-INSPECTION, PROOF, EXPERIMENTS, &c. This covers

the cost of inspection and proof of Naval Armament, Torpedo and Mining Stores (Salaries, Wages, Stores, &c.);

the cost of the Torpedo Experimental Department (Salaries, Wages, Stores, &c.); contribution to the War Department for storekeeping, &c., of Naval Armament Stores at Army Depots at Home and Abroad;

the cost of trials and experiments with Naval Armament Stores at Woolwich and Shoebury. ness Experimental Establishments;

the Admiralty share of the cost of the Salaries and Wages of the Ordnance Committee, War Office Research Department and Experimental Establishment, Shoeburyness;

the Admiralty share of the cost of the Joint Naval and Military Design Department;

the Admiralty share of the cost of Grain Island Firing Range, Reconstruction, &c., of Firing Butts at Shoeburyness and other services connected with the provision of facilities for proof and experiments of Naval Armament Stores.

Provision has also been included for reserve of raw material for the Ordnance Factories and for payment of a contribution to the War Office on account of the Admiralty share of the cost of the maintenance of Reserve Plant, &c., in the Ordnance Factories.

Provision for Chemists engaged mainly in Analytical work is made in Vote 6. Subhead N N.

The cost of the Stores issued from Naval Stocks for use by the Ordnance Committee, and by Proof, Research and Experimental Establishments for Naval trials, etc.. is provided for under the relative store and wages subheads of this Vote.

The approximate value of such stores for 1927 is 100,0001.
