SEPTEMBER 14, 1908-JUNE 4, 1909 Presented by the Board of Education Miss Ednah Anne Rich, Principal Montara College of Arts and Crafts is a school particularly adapted to the training of boys. Its location will appeal to all who delight in the beauties of nature. It is situated in a sheltered amphitheatre of the Montara Mountains and overlooking the Pacific Ocean where vessels of all description may be seen nearly every hour of the day. The grounds are ample, the buildings substantial, and the equipment complete. The instructors are men of exemplary character and each a specialist in his chosen line of work. The courses are largely elective. A pupil may choose any subject for which he may feel fitted, or for which he may feel a special need. A diploma, however will mean not only time spent in actual study in classroom and workshop, but a complete course well done. We will not guarantee employment after graduation, but we will guarantee the ability to "make good" in almost any position which may be offered, or the inventive genius necessary to create one's own position whereby he can earn an honest livelihood. The object is to train the hand, the foot, the eye, the mind, the heartin fact the whole man for any duty or position which may come his way. It is the only institution of its kind in California, where the boy may be boarded and cared for while learning some useful tradeand this at an expense of only Thirty Dollars a month. The object is not the making of money, but the making of men, believing that it is an hundred fold better to help the boy to help himself, than to leave him an inheritance which will prevent the necessity of an honest effort for an honest living. It is better to live in the lives of one's pupils and proteges than to be honored in song or story; and any one who assists a boy to a training of this kind should not consider it a contribution to charity but an investment which will return a profit in nobleness of character and ability to render service. Academic branches are arranged for all who may be deficient in this respect, while in the workshop will be taught original designing and the manufacture of all manner of useful articles. Each pupil will be required to design, cast to measurements, make the pattern and complete some article of furniture each term, and any one assisting a hoy through the year may select, free of charge, any article thus manufactured. The Montara College of Arts and Crafts is located at Montara, a new town on the Ocean Shore Railroad, just one hour's ride from Twelfth and Mission Streets, in the heart of San Francisco. Take train any morning from the Ocean Shore Depot for Montara, get off at the little granite depot, and take carriage for the College, one mile back from the beach in the foothills of the beautiful Montara Mountains. The College will be open for matriculation on Monday, September 14, 1908, and as only a limited number can be received this Fall, it will be well to apply early.
