(a) For spirits, chicory, glucose, table waters and artificial silk the figures represent the quantity made and in the other cases the quantities charged with duty.

(b) Frior to 1913 the quantity shown as made was the quantity on which the gross amount of duty was paid in the year while the quantity retained for consumption was based on the gross receipt of duty less drawbacks on beer exported, &c.: Since then the "quantity made" represents the number of barrels charged with duty, and the consumption represents this quantity less the quantity on which drawback, &c., has been paid.

(c) Includes about 1,030,000 gallons duty paid for use in munitions.

LOCAL TAXATION ACCOUNTS.

No. 109.-PAYMENTS TO LOCAL TAXATION ACCOUNTS, &C.

CERTAIN of these GRANTS represent PAYMENTS in respect of DUTIES which were assigned by various Acts to Local
Purposes. Prior to 1907-8, those Duties were paid direct to the Local Taxation Accounts, &c., but under
the Finance Act, 1907, they were paid to the Exchequer, and the equivalent thereof was made payable from the
Consolidated Fund. Under the "Finance (1909-10) Act, 1910," and the "Revenue Act, 1911," certain of these
payments have been fixed at the equivalent of the proceeds of the particular duties for the year 1908-9.
