(b) The figures as to pensions payable for 1918 and 1919 include the following numbers of cases in which additional allowances of 28. 6d. were payable :-1918, England and Wales 665,172, Scotland $9,206; 1919, England and Wales 651,632, Scotland 86,816.

(e) The totals for 1920 include "special cases" numbering 4,403 in England and Wales and 603 in Scotland, in which the pension had not been adjusted to the new rates under the Old Age Pensions Act, 1919. These cases are not included in the analysis by amounts of pension shown in the subsequent columns.

(d) The alteration in the means qualification in the Old Age Pensions Act, 1924, resulted in an increase, both in the number of pensions and in the proportion of pensioners paid at the maximum rate. This Act applies to Great Britain only. Table continued on next page.
