Jacob Schaefer won the world's 18inch balkline, shot in, billiard championship from George Sutton by a score of 500 to 448 at Chicago on March 11. Schaefer had an average of 13 32-36 and Sutton of 12 16-36. The former's high run was 100, and Sutton's best inning was 51 one Sutton and Schaefer met again on December 3 at 18.1, and Schaefer successfully defended his title, the score being 500 to 486. Schaefer's high score was 88 and average 11 27-43, and Sutton's high run 37, average 11 24-43. Calvin Demarest, of Chicago, won the national amateur billiard championship at 14-inch balkline, two shots in, decided at the Liederkranz Club, New York City, during the second week in March. He won five games without a defeat. Gardner, of Passaic, N. J., the old title holder, played off a tie with C. F. Conklin, of Chicago, and was defeated. The final standing of the players in the tournament follows: The series of thirty-six games, comprising the national three-cushion billiard championship tournament, which began at St. Louis on November 7 and ended on December 3, resulted in a tie between Harry Cline, of Philadelphia, and John Daly, of New York. On the play-off Cline won by a score of 50 to 41. The order of finish of the other contestants was: Horgan, third; Jevne, fourth; De Oro, Day and Hueston tied for fifth; Lear, sixth, and Capron, seventh. Thomas Hueston, of St. Louis, defeated Jerome Keogh for the pool championship of the world at New York on March 23. The score was 600 to 497. CHESS. By defeating the United States by a score of 5% to 41⁄2 games Great Britain won the international cable chess match on February 22 and 23 and captured the Sir George Newnes Trophy. At one time the trophy seemed to be in the grasp of Dr. Emanuel Lasker and Frank J. Marshall played a series of fifteen matches for the championship of the world, beginning on January 26 and ending on April 8. The final score was Lasker, 8; Marshall, 0; drawn, 7. Julius Finn won the New York State Championship, decided at the Rice Chess Club on February 16. The final score was Finn, 32; Johner, Helms and Jaffe, 2%. BICYCLING. THE SIX-DAY RACES.
