If the old Turks had had the same plan, they would have exterminated the Hungar ans, Rumanians, Bulgarians, Arabs, etc. But the old Turks had not conceived the plan of Turkification. The Young Turks have learned it from other nat ons, especially from the pan-Slavism of Russia and the pan-Germanism of Germany. So they got pan-Turanianism. ISLAM A MASK TO TURKISH NATIONALISM. To carry out this plan of Turkification, the Nationalists are taking advantage of the fanaticism and bigotry of the common Turkish people. They are giving a religious coloring to their work. They pose as champions and defenders of Islam by destroying the enemies of Islam; that is, Greeks and Armenians. Consequently, they arouse the fanaticism of the mob to kill the infidels and take possession of their women and property. To do so is to promote the cause of Islam. The Nationalist Turks in general are agnostics or materialists, with no moral principle but expediency and might makes right." After the burning of Smyrna, Tedhidi Efkrir, a Turkish paper in Constantinople, wrote: "We always believe might makes right." They wear, however, the mask of Islam in order to impress their nationalistic program on the common people, who know nothing of nationalism but can be made tools of any godless leaders to perpetrate deeds of brutality.
