Colcord, Governor of Nevada : SIR In accordance with the Statutes of Nevada, I have the honor to transmit to you the Fourth Annual Report of the Board of Control of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station. To the Board of Control of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station : GENTLEMEN: I have the honor to submit herewith my report as Director of the Experiment Station for the year ending January 31, 1892, accompanied by the reports of the different members of the Station Staff and the financial statement of the Treasurer. In March Mr. R. H. McDowell, formerly connected with Purdue University at Lafayette, Indiana, but more recently with the Colorado Agricultural College, was appointed Agriculturist and Horticulturist of the Station, and in August Dr. J. W. Phillips, who had been Station Chemist for two years, was transferred to the University, and Mr. N. E. Wilson, Chemist of the Standard Oil Company at Bayonne. New Jersey, was elected in his place. These gentlemen are believers in the maxim: "There is no reward without great labor," and are working assiduously to advance the interests of their respective departments and of the Station as a whole A very creditable exhibit was made by the Station at the State Fair in this city and at the Agricultural District Fair, No. 1, in Carson City. It attracted the attention of visitors in no small degree and was favorably commented upon, especially by farmers and their wives. One farmer remarked to the writer: "I have learned as much from this exhibit as I could by experimenting on my ranch two or three years.". During the past season a good deal of attention has been given to sugar beet experiments, the prime object being to ascertain whether Nevada can raise beets of a quality suitable for profitable sugar manufacture. The other principal experiments made on the farm were with potatoes, wheat, fodder corn, flax, hemp, sorghum and tobacco. |
