• The expenditure out of these Grants in Aid will not be accounted for to the Comptroller and Auditor General, nor will any unexpended balances of the sums issued be surrendered by the payees at the close of the financial year. The audit of the accounts of the Medical Research Council, in accordance with the terms of the Royal Charter, will be undertaken by the Comptroller and Auditor General.

A condition of the Grant is that the Society exhibits to the public, free of charge, its collection of maps. § The Grant is subject to the condition that an equivalent sum at least is subscribed by the public. The Grant is subject to the conditions (1) that work to the value of the Grant has been carried out, and (2) that subscriptions of at least an equivalent amount have been received from outside sources.

Under the first proviso to subsection (1) of section 3 of the Ministry of Health Act, 1919, the duties heretofore performed by the Medical Research Committee are to be carried on by or under the direction of a Committee of the Privy Council and the Medical Research Council is to be incorporated under Royal Charter for the purpose. Under the above Act the power of the Insurance Commissioners to retain funds under the proviso to subsection (2) of section 16 of the National Insurance Act, 1911, was not transferred to the Ministry of Health

Each of these officers has an official residence. The Astronomer Royal is also in receipt of a salary of 4001. as Professor of Astronomy in Edinburgh University, which is paid from the Grant to Scottish Universities, Class IV., 10. The rate of bonus applicable to Salaries, &c., is shown on page 8.
