thing in the world." Faith, hope and love, the ever memorable trinity of the soul, radiated outward in a hopeful, courageous and never failing activity.

optimism is seen also

Another source of Paul's audacious in his impressive sense of future glory. Life, for him, was not "such stuff as dreams are made on;' nor was it a "little life rounded with a sleep;" nor was it a volatile and irredescent bubble on the eternal surge of things, to be extinguished in a moment and lost in the immensity of being. But rather was it continuous, finding its natural goal in the life of the unseen world the life of those who had fought the good fight and finished their course a life far more real than any that earth could yield. In the hope of that glory and its abiding reality, he lived, and worked and died. Its wondrous beauty, beyond all earthly ken, was always before his inner sight; and its song like the song of angels was ever singing in his heart; making him superior to the sin and misery of a decaying civilization; rather, sending him into the heart of it with a hope that forbade retreat.

And all this may be translated into the terms of our modern life. Indeed, it has been so translated in the finest expression of our literature, in the noble service of our charities, in the splendid sacrifices of our reformers and in the religious thought, the religious devotion and the religious activities, which all the world is glad to recognize and praise. More and more does the world need to revere a universal leadership, to redeem to larger and more fitting use its present resources and get some clearer and more inspiring sight of the good and the glory that are to come. In last resort, these are the things that carry hope and cheer to all distracted and wretched life. By the power of these great conceptions, Paul became master of a religion at once most strenuous and hopeful; and after the Christ, no strain of life has in it more of the passion of faith and the patience of hope than that which speaks in the words, rejoices in the conduct, and lends beauty and power to the life and character of the greatest apostle.
