The Biographical Department comprises a list of all persons who have died during the year, with separate articles on the most important, and articles on such living persons as have become prominent during the year or have added to their record some noteworthy achievement. Biographical Over forty special contributors have supplied articles in their respective fields. Thus, matters pertaining to Agriculture, Horticulture, Economic Botany, Irrigation, Foods, etc., are treated by well-known experts in the Department of Agriculture at Washington. Chemistry is Special Contribu tors on Science, treated by Professors Baskerville, Rosanoff, Merigold, and Dr. Benjamin; Architecture by Professor A. D. F, Hamlin, of Columbia University; Archæology by Professor Tonks, of Princeton; Sanitary Engineering and Public Works by M. N. Baker, of the Engineering News: Naval Progress by Commander Van Duzer; Mining Engineering and Mineral Production by Dr. Joseph Struthers; Music by Professor Alfred Remy; Physics by Professor Tufts, of Columbia, Zoology by Professor Treadwell, of Vassar, etc. Arts, etc. The statistics of States, countries, etc., in this volume are derived from the latest official reports available at the time of publication; the figures for societies, colleges, reli Latest Statistical gious bodies, etc., from information supplied by the organizations themselves. The purpose has been to place articles under the headings to which a reader would naturally turn first. In some departments, as Psychology, Astronomy, Meteorology, Architecture, Archæology and Music, the discussion is found under these general heads; in others, like Civil Special Articles on Important Subjects Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, Manufactures, Sports, Among the longer articles of special interest may be mentioned an article on Gifts and Bequests in 1907, prepared by Mr. George J. Hagar, who for many years contributed an article on this subject to the Appleton's Annual. This subject is of Gifts and Bequests special interest now, because in spite of the financial depression the aggregate of gifts and bequests of the year 1907 was larger than during any previous year in our history.
