This Protectorate has an area of about 33,660 square miles and a population of about 1,500,000. It is not a very rich country, although the German Government have done much to develop its resources. The Protectorate has an extremely limited littoral, and Lome, the capital, is the only port of entry. In order to assist communication between the two commercial ports, a railway has been built and runs between Lome and Anecho, which is close to the Dahomey frontier. This latter port used to be the capital of the colony. It is an unhealthy spot, however, and when a serious outbreak of yellow fever occurred there a few years ago, the capital was shifted to Lome. The Protectorate possesses three railways and about 500 miles of excellent roads. the The following shows the revenue and expenditure of Togo during years 1912-13 For the financial year 1912, the receipts realised from the three railways were as follows:-Receipts, 47,1197.; expenditure, 24,6317. These railways are: In 1912 the receipts from the Lome Pier were 16,7851. and the expenditure 16,6351. In 1913 the railway receipts were 42,2151. and the Lome Pier receipts amounted to 17,3721. The figures showing the expenditure for the railway and pier in 1913 are not yet available, |
