These money orders are accepted by merchants at the face value in European cities. Post office orders are now issued between Australia and New Caledonia. Vessels going to any ports on the coast of New Caledonia pick up pilots at the above-mentioned stations. Pilotage is compulsory. The exemption does not apply to foreign vessels, which are classed as in the second category (up to 300 tons at 40 c. per ton register), but the minimum fee in any case must not be less than 31. A minimum tonnage is provided for in each category so that vessels of a superior tonnage shall not pay a rate inferior to those in the next lower grade. SHIPPING Dues. Port and lighthouse dues (phare et balisage).-All vessels entering any port in New Caledonia pay 40 c. per ton register. Sanitary dues.-15 c. per ton register. Navigation or coastal dues (navigation intérieure).-Any foreign vessel proceeding to any port on the coast pays 1 fr. 50 c. (1s. 23d.) per ton register. French vessels only are exempt. PRINCIPAL Centres, Ports and Harbours. Noumea, capital and largest town of the island. Good port. Large wharf accommodation; depth of water at wharf, 28 feet. Fresh water supplied to vessels at 2 fr.
