hoists and lifts, hydraulic pipes, factory buildings, scaffoldings at buildings in course of construction and gangways for shipbuilding work. Many of these investigations have involved difficult calculations to determine the amount and character of the stresses which brought about the failure of the material (wood, cast and wrought iron, steel, bronze, etc.), of which the structure concerned was made up. In several instances he was able to show that the initial design was faulty and that failure was eventually certain. In the latter cases steps were taken to ensure that similar constructions were re-designed or suitably strengthened. As a result of his calculations, he was able to convince the Court in the two instances that the factory buildings under review were in a dangerous condition and closing Orders were obtained. He also attended four inquests, in which his special technical knowledge was most useful. In more routine matters Mr. Pollard has made special inquiries into the fencing of woodworking machinery, wood wool machines, capstan lathes, hosiery calenders, felt hat presses and weavers' beam lifting apparatus. He has attended the whole of the meetings of the British Engineering Standards Association Crane Committee, and he has assisted the Committees dealing with (a) dust in cotton card rooms, and (b) methods of producing air movement in humid cotton weaving sheds.
