The cost of repairs and supplies referred to in the foregoing statement apply to typewriters purchased and in use prior to the beginning of the fiscal year 1915. Statement with respect to typewriters required by section 4 of the legislative, executive, and judicial appropriation act approved July 16, 1914, pertaining to the United States Marine Corps. 3d Session. No. 1270. ARMY TRANSPORTS "CROOK" AND "MEADE." LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF WAR, REQUESTING THAT THE NECESSARY AUTHORITY BE GRANTED FOR THE SALE OF THE ARMY TRANSPORTS "CROOK” AND “MEADE.” DECEMBER 9, 1914.-Referred to the Committee on Military Affairs and ordered to be printed. WAR DEPARTMENT, Washington, November 19, 1914. SIR: Referring to the following provision of law (act of Mar. 2, 1905, 33 Stat., 837), viz: Hereafter no steamship in the transport service of the United States shall be sold or disposed of without the consent of Congress having been first had or obtainedI have the honor to request that the necessary authority be granted for sale of the Army transports Crook and Meade. The former is now 32 years old, and the latter 40 years old, and both are in such physical condition that they can no longer be economically operated, and it is felt that their continuance as transports is not justified by any service they can render. In a recent report on the Meade, an inspector general stated that that vessel was unfit, and even dangerous, for the transport of troops. It is requested that this letter be referred to the chairman Military Affairs Committee, for consideration in connection with the act making appropriations for the support of the Army during fiscal year 1916. Very respectfully, HENRY BRECKINRIDGE, The SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. O EXPENDITURES OF UNITED STATES COURT OF CUSTOMS APPEALS.
