Over 600 Wassermann tests on blood sera were made and 100 cerebro-spinal fluids were examined by Wassermann for increased globulin and Fuchs-Rosenthal cell count. The Wassermann reac tion was applied to 81 per cent of the new admissions with the following results: Of the men (161 cases) 29.8 per cent were positive. Of the women (182 cases) 18.2 per cent were positive. Many of the old residents have been examined, and it is planned to apply the test to the whole hospital population, and to check up the results by autopsy, when possible. Laboratory work: The pathological laboratory was removed to the Elmwood building, where the quarters are much larger and more suited for the work done. It now comfortably accommodates the members of the staff at staff meetings as well as the pathological clinics for the students of the University of Buffalo, conducted by Dr. John L. Eckel, formerly of our staff, and now neuro-pathologist of the University of Buffalo, in conjunction with Dr. Joseph B. Betts, pathologist of our staff, using the hospitals delineascope. PREVENTION AND AFTER-CARE WORK During the past year there have been discharged from the hospital 280 patients, exclusive of deaths. None of these patients has been discharged without careful provision being made for their future welfare. Very rarely is any patient discharged alone, and then only when they are perfectly recovered and are going to a home, to friends, or a position, previously arranged for. Most of our patients come from the city of Buffalo, and can report easily to the hospital and can be kept track of. When necessary physicians make visits to the residences in town or to places outside of the city in keeping track of discharged patients. As a rule patients are discharged on parole, and a great majority report to the hospital and do not finally receive their discharge until after the hospital considers they are doing the best possible. RE-EDUCATION OF INSANE The hospital has maintained workshops for many years, in which the making of clothing, boots and shoes, upholstery and recaning furniture and tinsmithing are done, and many patients therein have acquired facility in trades useful when they are able to leave the institution. Of course, many are employed in gardening and farm work during the proper season. We have a school for girls and young women, and the students, of course, are largely made up of cases of dementia praecox, and yet we have a number of cases of recoverable psychoses, especially foreigners, to whom the education in English, etc., is an advantage, not only in mental training, but of great assistance when they go to resume their life outside the institution. AMUSEMENT AND RECREATION OF PATIENTS Baseball, billiards, cards, checkers, chess, croquet, dominoes, pianos, pianolas, phonographs, pool, quoits, table croquet, dances, moving pictures, etc. NOTEWORTHY OCCURRENCES Escapes: Seventeen men and 2 women eloped; 9 men and both women were returned to the hospital. One man was found dead two months later under a vacant house in the city, evidently selfstarved, and 7 were not heard from. None of these were considered dangerous to themselves or others.
