He was educated abroad and at Phillips Exeter academy, and later at Harvard, from which he graduated in 1888. After two years of travel, he entered the Harvard law school from which he was appointed second secretary of the legation at London in 1891. In 1894 he was first secretary of the embassy at Rome; and resigned in 1897. He served in the Spanish-American war and commissioned captain and assistant adjutant general. In 1911 he was appointed envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Belgium; and in 1912 was made ambassador extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Japan; and resigned in 1913. He has filled the chair of Scandinavian languages and literature in the university of Wisconsin; and there founded a Scandinavian library. He has lectured extensively on the subject of Norse literature and mythology. For four years he was United States minis ter to Denmark. He has contributed to Johnston's Universal Encyclopedia, the British Britannica and Chamber's Encyclopedia; and edited the Norrona library, in sixteen volumes. Since 1898 he has been editor and publisher of Amerika, a weekly Norwegian paper. He is the author of Norse Mythology; America Not Discovered by Columbus; Echoes from Mist Land; History of the Literature of the Scandinavian North; Viking Tales of the Law; and other works and several books in Norwegian.

Andrews, Eugene Merritt, banker of Union, N.Y., was born Sept., 1843, in Collinsville, Conn. He is president of the Farmers' National bank.

Andrews, Fannie Fern (Phillips), lecturer and social worker of 405 Marlborough st., Boston, Mass., was born in Margaretville. Nova Scotia. She graduated from the Salem normal school of Massachusetts in 1884; received the degree of A.B. from the Radeliffe college in 1902; and attended the Harvard summer school for several terms. She has lectured in America and Europe; and has written on the interna
