ECLIPSES.

In the year 1884, which is a leap year, there will be five eclipses, three of the Sun and two of the Moon.

I. A partial eclipse of the Sun, March 27th, invisible in America. The eclipse, which will be a small one, will be almost exclusively confined to Northern Europe.

II. A total eclipse of the Moon, April 10th, partly visible in various parts of the United States before the Moon sets in the morning. The eclipse will be total on the Pacific Coast, in the Pacific Ocean and in Asia. The times of the various phases are as follows:

III. A partial eclipse of the Sun, April 25th, invisible in America. The eclipse will be visible at the extreme points of South Africa and South America, and in the Southern Atlantic Ocean.

IV. A total eclipse of the Moon, October 4th, partly visible in the Atlantic States when the Moon rises. The total phase of the eclipse ends at 5h. 49m. p. m., and the Moon leaves the shadow at 6h. 49m. p. m., standard Eastern time. The eclipse will be seen as a total eclipse in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean.

V. A partial eclipse of the Sun, October 18th, visible only in Alaska and adjoining parts of North America, Northeastern Asia, and the extreme Northern Pacific Ocean.

Planetary Conjunctions.

Venus will be in conjunction with Neptune March 27, with Saturn April 12, with the Sun (inferior) July 11, with Mercury July 12, with Jupiter October 6, with Regulus October 7, with Uranus November 4.

Mars will be in conjunction with the Star Regulus May 31, with Neptune July 19, with Mercury December 4 and December 29.

Jupiter will be in conjunction with Mercury July 23, with the Sun August 7, and with Venus October 6.

Saturn will be in conjunction with Venus April 12, with the Sun June 3, with Mercury June 25.

Uranus will be in conjunction with the Star Beta Virginis July 30.

The Earth is in perihelion January 2, and aphelion June 30.

No important occultations will be visible at Washington during the year.

In the above table the time of the Moon's crossing the 75th meridian is given to the nearest minute for every day of the year in Standard Eastern time. To find the time when the Moon will cross each of the other Standard time meridians, add two minutes for each meridian west of the 75th. Thus, on January 1, the Moon crosses the 75th meridian at 2:39 p. m. It will, therefore, cross the 90th at 2:41 p. m., the 105th at 2:43 p. m., and the 120th at 2:45 p. m.

The time of the Moon's southing is particularly useful on the coast, in enabling sailors and others to foretell approximately the time of high water. Knowing the "establishment of the port," as it is called-that is, the average interval elapsing between the Moon's southing and the next high water, for any given locality-the time of high water is found by adding this establishment to the time of the Moon's southing. Thus, the establishment of the port of New-York being 8h. 00m., add to this the Moon's southing on January 1, 2:39 p. m., and the result, 10h. 39m. p. m., will be the time of high water on the evening of that day. This, it must be remembered, is only a rough approximation to the true time, but it will usually be found near enough for all practical purposes. Where the "establishment of the port" is not known it may be found by noting the time of high water after full Moon and deducting from it the time of the Moon's southing that day. And this establishment may be further corrected by ascertaining the differences in time between the Moon's southing and high water for a month, and taking the mean or average.

The Calendar.

The following calendar having been computed and stereotyped before the recent adop tion of Standard time, the hours of the daily and other phenomena are given throughout in the local mean time of the places named. Due allowance must the efore be made for the difference between the Standard time and the local mean time of the locality. This difference must be added to the calendar time for all places west of the Standard time meridian, and subtracted from it for all places east, in order to give the correct time of the phenomena in Standard time. Thus New-York and Washington are on different sides of the 75th meridian, the former being 4 min. East and the latter 8 min. West. On January 1 the sun rises at New-York at 7:24 a. m, local or calendar time. Subtracting the difference, 4 min. and we have 7 h. 20 min. as the hour of sunrise at New-York, Standard Eastern time. At Washington on the same morning the sun rises at 7 h. 19 min. Adding 8 min. gives, 7h. 27 min. as the hour of sunrise at Washington in Standard Eastern time. Similar corrections can readily be made for each locality.
