ECLIPSES. In the year 1883 there will be four eclipses, two of the Sun and two of the Moon. I. A partial eclipse of the Moon, April 22, invisible in the Eastern States, but visible on the Pacific Coast, the Pacific Ocean, and in Asia. II. A total eclipse of the Sun, May 6, invisible in the United States. The central path or line of totality lies wholly in the South Pacific Ocean, starting at a point near the east coast of South Australia, crossing the Friendly and Marquesas Islands, and ending off the coast of Peru, where the phenomenon will be seen at sunset as a partial eclipse. III. A partial eclipse of the Moon, October 16, visible throughout the United States and on the Pacific Ocean : Magnitude of the eclipse = 0.280 (Moon's diameter being 1). IV. An annular eclipse of the Sun, October 30, invisible in the United States, excepting on the western side of the Rocky Mountains, where a partial eclipse will be visible just before sunset. The path of the annular eclipse begins in Corea, crosses Japan and ends in the North Pacific Ocean. Mercury, January 22, May 14 and September 11, setting soon after the Sun; also March 8, July 2 and October 22, rising then immediately before the Sun. Venus, January 9. Mars, not this year. Jupiter, not this year. Saturn, November 28. Planetary Conjunctions. Mercury will be in conjunction with Mars February 13, March 17; with Jupiter July 20; with Saturn May 1; with Uranus August 24; and with Neptune April 27. Venus will be in conjunction with Mercury July 3, July 8 and October 4; with Mars May 10; with Jupiter July 26; with Saturn June 19; with Uranus September 17; and with Neptune June 8. Mars will be in conjunction with Jupiter October 19; with Saturn July 20; and with Neptune June 26. In addition to the above, Venus will be in conjunction with the star Eta Ophiuchi January 19; with Pi Sagittarii February 20; with Delta Capricorni March 26: and with Lambda Aquarii April 10. Mars will be in conjunction with the star Mu Geminorum August 29; with Delta Geminorum September 20; and in Præsepe October 24. Jupi ter will be in conjunction with Mu Geminorum May 23; and stationary near Præsepe November 21. Saturn will be in conjunction with Aldebaran August 13 and November 1. Mercury will be in conjunction with Delta Capricorni March 9; and with Gamma Virginis October 20. Uranus will be in conjunction with Beta Virginis October 13.
