In the year 1882 there will be two eclipses, both of the Sun. 1. A Total Eclipse of the Sun, May 17, invisible in this country. The line of totality starts in Northern Africa, passes across the Red Sea and Central Asia, and leaves that Continent at Shanghai. It will be visible in Europe as a partial eclipse. II. An Annular Eclipse of the Sun, November 10, invisible in the United States. The central track of this eclipse begins near the Philippine Islands, passes north of Australia and New-Zealand, and along the southern part of New-Guinea, and ends near Easter Island in the Southern Pacific Ocean. In Australia and New-Zealand it will be visible as a partial eclipse. TRANSIT OF VENUS. In addition to these solar eclipses, there will be a Transit of Venus across the Sun's disk, December 6. This is the last Transit of Venus that will occur for two centuries, the next transit taking place June 8. A. D. 2004. In Europe, the ingress or entrance of the planct on the solar surface will alone be seen. At San Francisco, and in most portions of the Northwest, ingress will take place before sunrise. In all other parts of the United States, the whole transit will be visible. The following table shows the time of ingress and egress at the places named. External contact will take place at Ingress 20 minutes earlier, and at Egress 20 minutes later, than the times named for internal contact. Venus, until February 20, after Dec. 6. Saturn, with Mercury May 4, and with Neptune May 11. Church Days and Cycles of Time. Jan. 6 .Feb. 5 Epiphany Southings of the Principal Planets. The planets Venus, Jupiter and Saturn will cross the meridian of Washington on the 1st and 15th of each month, as below, in Washington mean time. The same figures will also be substantially correct for any other meridian in the United States : The Eclipses of Jupiter's Satellites have been carefully calculated, and the times of their disappearance and reappearance set down in the National Ephemeris. They are useful in furnishing local time where the longitude is known, or the longitude where correct local time is known. In the following table are given the phases of the eclipses visible at Washington, with the Washington mean time of their occurrence. Between conjunction and opposition the shadow of Jupiter lies to the west or right of the planet (by direct vision), where the phenomena should be looked for. After opposition the satellites disappear, and reappear on the east or left-hand side of the planet. The satellites are represented by the Roman numerals I, II, III, according to the order of their distance from Jupiter. D is the disappearance or immersion of the satellite in the shadow of the planet. Rits reappearance. The fourth satellite will not be eclipsed during 1882. |
