Excerpt from Clovercroft Chronicles, 1314-1893

To record some traditions and recollections that would pass away with myself, now the eldest in my generation, I began to write these chronicles.

Intended chiefly for the family of Clovercroft, and especially for my only child, who was deprived of the care of a most loving and honorable father when little more than ten months old, I hope they may not be without interest to some others of kindred descent.

I have carefully endeavored, so far as practicable with the resources that were at my command, to be accurate. From original records, certificates, and other manuscripts in my pos session much has been drawn that is entirely reliable: to say that no mistakes have been made in any of the oldest dates and names would be presuming, but I have verified them as nearly as I can by collating with accounts to which I have had access.

It is my desire that the record here presented of many Chris tian men and women, whose aim it was to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with their God, may be an encouragement and a stimulus to their descendants to prefer and persevere in the paths of righteousness and peace, under the leadership of the heavenly Shepherd, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Like ourselves, our ancestors partook of the common lot of humanity. Life - with its joys and sorrows, its toils and trials.
