As the ecclesiastical history of Lancashire has so much that is peculiar and distinctive, it seemed to me to deserve, especially from Protestant Dissenters, more attention than it has hitherto obtained. I have, therefore, at the request of several Lancashire friends, made an attempt to describe the religious life of their county to such extent and within such limits as they have desired. To myself the subject is of great interest, although I may not have succeeded in making it interesting to others.

I have gratefully to acknowledge the assistance and encourage ment of many friends, but especially of Joseph Thompson, Esq., of Manchester, to whom I am indebted for the loan of many valuable books, and for services too numerous to mention, but too generously rendered to be forgotten.
