Development of a Reconfigurable Assembly System for the Assembly of Press Brakes

The development of product varieties due to frequent changes in market demands, shorter product life cycles, global competition, improved quality and the growing trends of outsourcing increases the time to realise the assembly system. The reconfigurable manufacturing paradigm has been identified as a paradigm that can sustain the turbulent market and dynamism of customer's demand. Reconfigurable assembly fixtures (RAFs) have been recognised as a major enabling element of these reconfigurable assembly systems. In this thesis, a reconfigurable assembly system that can be used for the assembly of press brakes is researched. This work proposes the design of a reconfigurable assembly fixture and a framework for assembling varying press brake models in a reconfigurable assembly system. In essence, the contributions of this thesis to the body of knowledge are the design of a reconfigurable assembly fixture and a reconfiguration model. The thesis also contributes to the development of a framework for assembly of press brakes, concept selection process for computer aided designs and synchronisation of multiple hydraulic actuators. Furthermore, the thesis contributes to the mathematical modelling of electrohydraulic systems comprising of multiple hydraulic actuators.
