SUMMARY OF NATIONAL AMATEUR GOLF TOURNEY.

After years of patient effort W. C. Fownes, jr., of Pittsburg, realized his ambition by winning the amateur galf title over the Jinks of the Country Club of Brookline last September. Fownes' hardest match occurred in the semi-final round, when he eliminated C. W. Evans, jr., the youthful prodigy from the West. The victory of the Pittsburg man was all the more sensational in that he stood two down with only three holes to play, but he made the last three holes in a stroke better than par. Low score honors in the qualifying round went to Fred Herreshoff, of Garden City, who made the thirty-six holes in 152. Herreshoff looked like a possible winner of the tournament until he met Evans in the third round. Fownes defeated Warren K. Wood, of Chicago, in the final round. Wood was wild and brilliant in streaks. The tournament was remarkable for two other things. There was a record breaking number of starters-more than two hundred. Then, two favorites, H. Chandler Egan and Robert Gardner, failed to qualify. ner won the title the year before.

SUMMARY OF WOMEN'S NATIONAL GOLF TOURNEY.

Miss Dorothy Campbell won the women's national golf championship tournament for the second year in succession over the
course of the Homewood Country Club, near Chicago, in October. The winner defeated Mrs. C. M. Martin in the final round.
Although entered from the Tavistock Golf Club, of England. Mrs. Martin is an American woman and learned her game in this coun-
try. Miss Campbell was born in Scotland and played mostly at North Berwick before coming to America. When she arrived here
shortly before the national tournament at Philadelphia Miss Campbell held the women's championship of Great Britain as well.
About a year ago Miss Campbell took up her residence in Canada, where she has resided since. There was only one entrant from

In the tricity matches for the Lesley cup, at Myopia, September 30 and October 1, Massachusetts beat Pennsylvania 10 to 5 on the first day and defeated Metropolitan 10 to 5 in the decisive contest. In the tricity matches for the Gris com cup, at Huntingdon Valley, June 6 and 7. Massachusetts beat Pennsylvania 8 to 7 on the first day and defeated Metropolitan 8 to 7 in the decisive contest.
