SHERIFF COURTS (Without full committal), JUSTICE OF PEACE COURTS AND BURGH POLICE COURTS. Notes to the Tables. TABLE III. (a) Tables III and IV include cases disposed of without being brought before a Court, such as liberations by the police on account of insufficient evidence, &c. (b) The list of crimes and offences is similar to that in Table I (see note (a) on page 21). (c) The Table shows the number of persons proceeded against, not the number of offences. Where, therefore, any person is prosecuted at the same time for several offences, one offence has to be selected for tabulation, and the rules followed are the same as in the foregoing tables (see note (e) page 21). (d) The Tables are for the calendar year ending 31st December, and include only persons finally disposed of within the year. Čases not entirely disposed of at the end of the year are held over for the following year's tables. (e) From Tables III to V are excluded cases where the accused has been fully committed till liberated in due course of law although afterwards ordered by Crown Counsel to be disposed of by the Sheriff summarily. Such cases are included in Tables VII to XII. (f) Column 2.-The numbers here agree with those in column 5 of Table I. (g) In column 4 are included cases in which, although the prisoner may not have been tried, a simple liberation did not follow, such as naval and military prisoners remitted to their ships or regiments for trial, and juveniles who, having absconded from reformatory or industrial schools and been arrested by the police, were sent back to school without further punishment. (h) Columns 6 and 7 include persons dealt with under the Probation of Offenders Act, 1907. (i) Column 7 includes persons placed under a bond with conditions as to supervision. (j) Column 8 includes only those committals to Industrial Schools where an offence is charged-i.e., committals under Section 58 (2) and (3) of the Children Act, 1908. Committals to Industrial Schools, where the proceedings are not criminal, appear in Table XV. (k) Columns 10 to 13 do not include terms of imprisonment in default of paying fines or of finding sureties. (1) Columns 15 and 16 include all cases in which a fine is imposed, whether it is paid or not. The number of persons committed to prison in default of paying fines is given in columns 24 and 25. (m) Column 17 contains all cases of persons sentenced to Reformatory School detention, whether they were actually admitted to a Reformatory or not. Details as to cases actually received into Reformatories are given in Table XIV. (n) Column 19 includes all cases where the accused is ordered to find caution, whether with or without sureties. TABLE IV. (0) Table IV gives similar particulars to those in Table III under Counties and Burghs instead of under Crimes and Offences. (p) The Burghs shown are the same as those in Table II. See also note (h) page 21. TABLE V. (q) Children who have not completed their fourteenth year are regarded as under 14, and are entered in column 3. Column 4 includes all persons who have completed 14 years, but not 16 years, and similarly with the other columns. TABLE VI. (r) Table VI gives particulars of persons released on Probation Order, Probation of Offenders Act, 1907. C Nature of Offences, and Results of Proceedings, with Particulars of year 1926. TRIED.
