In this Table two sentences passed at the same time and ordered to run consecutively are treated as one sentence equal in length to the two added together. In the case of concurrent sentences the longer only is given. In 17 cases the above sentences were to be followed by Preventive Detention, viz:-5 years Penal Servitude, 2 cases; 4 years, 2 cases; and 3 years, 13 cases. In 7 cases the above sentences were to be followed by Police Supervision, viz-5 years Penal Servitude, 1 case: 12 months Imprisonment, 2 cases; 6 months, 1 case; 3 months, 1 case; 3 weeks, 1 case; and 2 weeks, 1 case, TABLE XXXII.—CONVICTS.-Length of Sentences of Convicts in Prison on 31st December, 1926. Note. In addition to those shown above, 11 Court-Martial Convicts were also in prison at the end of the year, viz :-Commuted Death Sentence, 2 cases; 20 years Penal Servitude, I case; 7 years, 2 cases; 5 years, 4 cases; and 3 years, 2 cases. TABLE XXXIII.-PREVENTIVE DETENTION.-Particulars of Persons sentenced to Preventive Detention. Under the provisions of the Prevention of Crime Act, 1908, if a person convicted upon indictment of a crime and sentenced to penal servitude is an habitual Persons undergoing preventive detention are subject to prison rules modified in the direction of less rigorous treatment and are confined in prisons set apart The cases of persons undergoing preventive detention are periodically reviewed with a view to discharge upon licence if there is a reasonable probability that (a).
