Harrington & his hands began repairing the Shingles on the three story house at the foot of the hill, and to new set the fence in front of my house, and put down rough stone posts and case them with wood. Hannah, Isaiah & William at Dinner. 7. Mr. & Mrs. Mycall from Cambridgeport, visit & dined. Mrs. W. T. Andrews, Mrs. Merrick, Frances, Caro James Hayward was graduated from Harvard in 1819; was tutor there for six years; and professor of mathematics and natural philosophy in 1826 and 1827. He afterwards became a civil engineer; made the first survey for the Boston and Providence Railroad; and took charge of the engineering and construction of the Boston and Maine Railroad, of which he became President. 2 Rev. Samuel Joseph May was graduated from Harvard in 1817, and was for some years the minister of the Unitarian church in Brooklyn, Conn. He later became the general agent of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society; was minister of the church in Scituate, Mass.; principal of the Lexington Normal School from 1842 to 1845; and was settled in Syracuse from that year until 1868. He was active in the cause of anti-slavery; one of the first members of the New England Society in 1832; and in 1833, a member of the Philadelphia convention which formed the American Antislavery Society. Rather unwell-very drowsy throughout the day Fire in my room. 12. Repaired the front Portico to my house, new Ceils, Flooring, &c.-The railing on the top of the house, &c. examined. New shingled the front of the 3 story house at the foot of the hill-began repairing all the fences, to the houses I own on the hill. Carpenters finished repairing &c. the fence in front of my dwelling house. 2 hands have been engaged a fortnight in that business, and 3 or 4 on other repairs for a month past. Still a little unwell. 13. Went to Church twice. Mr. Nash preached all day. Mr. Wm. T. Andrews & Lady, Frances, Caroline, Hannah & William at Dinner. 14. Cold Spring thus far generally only 2 days that I had not a fire in my room, mornings and Evenings particularly. Fire this morning at breakfast, & also thro' the day & Evening. 15. Put new fences to the yard of the house behind the Court house-Repairs to the Barn, &c. &c. removed Hay & Necessary. 16. New shingled the front porch of my dwelling house.
