ACCOUNT of the Sum Expended, compared with the Sum Granted, to the Board of Trustees for Manufactures in Scotland in aid of the Maintenance of the NATIONAL GALLERY, SCHOOL OF ART, and MUSEUM OF ANTIQUITIES, &c., SCOTLAND, in the Year ended 31st March 1906.

The above Grant (2,000l. of which is derived from the Treaty of Union) is practically a Grant in Aid of the Funds of the Board of Manufactures, which are applied in maintaining in Edinburgh the Government Establishments of the Royal Institution, the National Gallery of Scotland, the School of Art, the National Museum of Antiquities, and Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

PURCHASE OF PICTURES ACCOUNT.

2. The balance in hand at the close of the previous year was 2,330l. 14s. 8d. The Grant in Aid, 1,000l., together with 1,745l. 158. d., received as private subscriptions in aid of the purchase of a picture by Sir Henry Raeburn, and sundry receipts for interest, etc., made a total of 5,0991. 58. 4d. Of this amount 4,7291. 58. 9d. was expended in the purchase of the picture mentioned, leaving a balance in hand on 31st March 1906 of 3691. 198. 7d.

National Portrait Gallery.

3. The Grant in Aid of the purchase of pictures for the National Portrait Gallery was 2001.
