EXPLANATION of the Causes of Variation between Expenditure and Grant. A.-Savings mainly due to unexpected changes in the Staff, and consequent new appointments at B. — The Inspector was engaged for some months on special inspections, which did not involve much outlay

for travelling.

D., The Expenditure varies, depending on the number and expenses of the prosecutions ordered by this
E.— The Expenditure for some of the items under this head was not as large as was anticipated.
F.- The Saving is chiefly under the heading of Taskwork, the cost of which is variable and dependent on

the number of Emigrants.

G.–The Amount received as Fees for Searches and Certified Copies was in excess of the sum estimated.

The Surplus of 6071. 17s. 8d., shown on the Account of the Vote “Registrar General's Office, Ireland," for the year ended 31st March 1905, has been surrendered.
