EXPLANATION of the Causes of Variation between Expenditure and Grant.

A.-Due to the amalgamation of the posts of House Governor and Medical Superintendent and to the substitution of female for male labour in the Subordinate Staff.

B.—Requirements under-estimated.
C.-Casual variation.

D.-Changes in the Staff, effected after this Estimate was framed, reduced requirements under the head of “ Victualling," and the expenditure on drugs and medical stores was less than had been anticipated.

E.—See Statement of New Works.

F.-Casual Variation.

G.-Casual Variation.
H.-Saving due to the mildness of the winter, and consequent decrease in the consumption of fuel.

J.--The receipts from Patients were in excess of anticipation.

EXTRA REMUNERATION. The present House Governor received from this Vote a gratuity of 401. for acting in a temporary capacity prior to the date of his appointment.

The Surplus of £3,148 188. 11d. shewn on the account of the Vote “Osborne ” for the year ended 31st March, 1905, has been surrendered.
