I have had so many inquiries about vacuum pans in connection with this new sugar making industry, that I have obtained an electrotype from one of the manufacturers, for whom I am soliciting orders. The above cut represents one set upon iron pillars. They are made of various sizes and prices. The elevation of the pan should be sufficient to discharge the strike into the centrifugal mixer. By this it will be seen that by this system of boiling the crystals are formed in the vacuum pan, where the heat is not above about 140 degrees Fah., while in the open pan it would run up to 234 degrees in this latitude. The vacuum is produced by means of pumps and a condensation of the steam with jets of cold water. The cane juice has first to be thoroughly defecated and clarified before entering the vacuum pan, as no scum can be removed from it after entering. There are efforts making to construct pans having vacuum effect and facilities for removing the scum also. Should this be successful, without danger or too much expense, it will prove of great benefit to the business. The fact is, the opening up of this industry is stirring up the inventive genius of this universal Yankee nation, and it will be strange indeed if some new departures are not forthcoming.

It is hardly probable that more vacuum pans will be set up for this crop this season, as there seems to be great confidence in obtaining good results from open pan boiling. Then there are many more efforts to be made in the culture with a view to the production of a better quality of juice. Nearly all our western agricultural colleges have applied to me for seed of all the approved varieties. Hence we may expect something from that source.

APPENDIX.

The Spring Tooth Harrow, from C. A. Crosby & Co., Kansas City, has been tested in part, (it was received late in the season,) and has proved a very efficient instrument, especially in rough and stumpy ground. The spring teeth readily clear themselves from stumps and other obstructions, and at the same time stir the soil close up to the stumps and rocks in its passage over and around them. We have also used it in cultivating young corn with marked success.

FARM IMPLEMENTS TESTED.

The Potato-bug Exterminator, manufactured by S. H. Fox, 1225 North Fifth street, St. Louis, has been thoroughly tested, and it has proved a very cheap, safe and efficient exterminator of all the insects of the farm and garden.

The Gale Chilled Plow, manufactured by the Gale Manufacturing Company of Adrian, Michigan, has proved an excellent implement. It is very durable, (nearly all iron and steel,) has a light draft, runs steady, and pulverizes the soil more perfectly than any plow used on the farm the past year.

The Board of Curators announced “a full course of lectures on Scientific Agriculture, by Prof. Swallow," in the year 1859, (Cat. 1859, pp. 26-27,) and in 1870, this Department was revived and reorganized, upon the basis of the Congressional land grant of 1862, and has, from its reopening, been in charge of Prof. Swallow, who was first entrusted by the Curators with this line of work twenty years ago.
