THE CARD INDEX OF EXPERIMENT STATION LITERATURE.

GENERAL PLAN OF THE INDEX.

The general plan on which the index is constructed may be briefly outlined as follows:

The subjects with which agricultural science deals have been grouped under a limited number of general topics. These topics have been divided and subdivided only so far as seemed necessary to facilitate references to the individual entries of the index. As the work of the stations reaches out in many directions into the domain of pure as distinguished from applied science, a section of the index has been set apart for entries relating to the general principles of the various sciences which lie at the foundation of experimental investigations in agriculture. This affords a wide opportunity for the extension of the index by individual students for their own special purposes.

The index is printed on cards of a standard library size. The divisions and subdivisions are arranged on a decimal system and are plainly indicated by the use of division cards of different colors,

Each index card contains the title of an article, the name of its author, a reference to the publication in which it appeared and to the Experiment Station Record, and a condensed statement of its contents. At the upper right-hand corner of the card is a number indicating under what head the card should be placed in the index The order in which the cards are arranged is indicated at the lower left-hand corner. A key to the index, containing the system of classification, is sent with the first installment of cards.

One copy of the index is sent without charge to each of the agricultural colleges and experiment stations and the State boards and commissioners of agriculture. Besides this free distribution the office is prepared, under the authority of the law, to furnish a limited number of sets of the index at a price only sufficient to cover additional cost of printing. This is estimated at $2 per thousand cards. For the division cards an additional charge of $1.25 is made.

B.-The index is arranged on a decimal system, the number on the card before the decimal point representing one of the grand divisions of the index and the numbers after the decimal point representing subdivisions of the several grades. Thus on a card numbered 12.34; 12=Statistics, .3=Equipment, .04-Implements. A card numbered 1.432 belongs under acclimatization (of plants); 3.3, chemistry of soils; 9.32, creaming of milk.

This is an account of comparative tests of the Pemberton method as modified by Kilgore and others on North Carolina, South Carolina. Florida, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania phos phates, cotton-seed meal, tankage, sodium phosphate, aluminum phosphate, Thomas slag, bone meal, acid phosphate, and mixed fertilizers, to determine the accuracy of the method as applied to substances of widely varying composition, and to ascertain the amount of washing necessary to free the yellow precipitate from acid. The method gave as good results as the gravimetric method on all the samples analyzed. Reprinted in the report of the station for 1897-98, p. 75.

The losses in a three days' test of cheese making were determined. The mechanical loss was found to be very light, the main source of loss being the whey and the drippings from the cheese press. About 90.5 per cent of the fat and 97 per cent of the casein in milk were recovered in the cheese. The percentages of the whole amount of the milk ingredients which appear in the cheese, the whey, and the drippings are estimated. The changes in cheese in ripening are mentioned.

Results of experiments in continuation of those reported in Bulletin 37 of the station (see card). Nine plantings of the same variety of corn were made one week apart between April 22 and June 17. Medium plantings gave the highest yields.
