THOMSON. As reporter of your Committee of Awards on Horses for the present year, 1879, I have the honor to make the following report and comparison with different classes of last year. Thoroughbreds, 16 (last year 16); Roadsters, 42 (last year 43); General Purpose, 43 (last year 40); Draft, 43 (last year 50); Light Harness, 26 (last year 16); Saddle, 3 (last year 8); Matched Teams, 8 (last year 12); Sweepstakes-Thoroughbreds and Roadsters, 15 (last year 13); Sweepstakes-Draft, 12 (last year 14); Jacks and Mules, 2 (last year 8); Runners, 2 (last year 9); Trotters and Pacers, 79 (last year 53)—total, 299 (last year 282). The Ohio State Fair was decidedly and deservedly a success this year in point of patronage and competition. Very liberal premiums should be given in the classes, but how to do it without the aid of the two grand auxiliaries, viz., patronage and good weather, is a very bothersome question. As the patronage comes strictly from the Ohio people, it is our humble opinion that the competition should be open only to horses, mules, and jacks owned in Ohio. Premiums on mules and jacks could with propriety be dropped. This year there was but one pair of mules, and jacks none. The Committee of Awards on Horses used excellent judgment in refusing to give awards in classes where the exhibited animals were worthless brutes; seven premiums offered were not awarded. It might be well not to allow animals to compete for a premium until the owners of said animals had filled the "Horse Records" with the required information. |
