This machine has proved quite successful. It is said that it will effectually break out all the shives without injury to the fibre, and that the yield of flax fibre, in proportion to the weight of flax straw dressed, exceeds, by at least one-fourth, that obtained by any other machine or process.

This machine has been largely used in the Eastern States, and is considered a highly valuable improvement. It has also been further improved since the above cut was made. Much attention has been given, and means appropriated by the United States Government, and by several States, within the last few years, for the purpose of investigation and the development of improvements in the manufacture of flax. It is an important interest to the whole country. We import flax seed, linseed oil and linen very largely, and it is believed unwisely. The culture of flax in Missouri has been neglected. The seed commands a high price, and there is a much larger amount of seed used in St. Louis for making oil than is produced in the State. If machines can be introduced for the successful manufacture of the straw into lint, the flax crop may become very profitable here. It is believed that a degree of success has been attained by the Sanford & Mallory machine deserving the attention of those interested. A large power machine is made which will dress tangled straw, either rotted or unrotted.

Plant & Brother, St. Louis, to whom we are indebted for the cuts of implements here introduced, are agents for the sale of these machines. We do not intend to entirely neglect the department of the ladies in respect to labor-saving machines. Improvements in this regard are quite as important as any other, and are now more than ever needed. The comfort, economy and happiness of the household has much more to do with successful farming than the majority of the farmers

seem to be aware of. Whatever facilitates and economizes the labor in the house, has its influence over the whole of the operations of the farm. If the comfort of the household is neglected, and the farmer's wife becomes a drudge, the sons and daughters grow up with an inveterate dislike and distaste for the life of the farm, and of course embrace the first opportunity to forsake it for the hazards and perplexities of trade, the professions, etc. Such a result falls far short of truly successful farming, even though money be accumulated by it.

The "Queen of the West" washing machine has been largely sold, and gives good satisfaction, probably better than the majority of washing machines of greater pretensions.

The cut is of size No. 2, with five tines. Figure 1 represents it in Working position. As shown in figure 2, it is folded to turn at the ends of the land, or to travel from field to field without working.

By means of the lever on the foot board, it is readily put in working position, or folded, with foot or hand of the driver, while riding or walking, and is perfectly under the control of any person capable of driving a team.

This Rotary Spader is a Western invention, and is, without doubt, justly considered one of the most, if not the most important of the recent inventions in farm machinery.

Hon. M. L. Dunlap, or Champaign, Illinois, Editor of the Illinois Farmer, gives the following account of its operation:

On several occasions we have made mention of this new implement, but until last week we have had no opportunity to see it in full work

ing condition-that is, in performing its daily task in that regular way to which all new agricultural implements must sooner or later come to the test of thorough trial.

As intimated in the June number of the Farmer, the machine was having a thorough trial on the farm of Mr. M. L. Sullivant, near Homer, in this county. On visiting Mr. Sullivant, we found that not only himself, but foreman and all hands, had spader on the brain. Mr. Comstock, the inventor (not the ci-devant Professor of terra culture), was present, and it might be that he mesmerized the parties so as to produce the effect so fully apparent.

Note book in hand, with a copy of Daboll in our pocket, or at least a vivid recollection of its pages as conned in boyhood, we were fully armed against any sinister influence from those in charge, with the inventor included. For two days we gave it a thorough investigation, and are now satisfied that we can speak of it by the card. A careful account has been kept of the work, which will give a very correct idea of the value of the implement in a labor-saving point of view. There are four of these spaders in use on the farm, each of which is in some respect different from the other. We will describe them somewhat at length.

LARGE FOUR-HORSE SPADER. This spader is three feet long, with a cylinder of two feet diameter. It has twelve forks with six tines each. The cut is six and one-fourth inches; that is, the spading tines enter the ground that distance apart. This distance is uniform in all the machines. This machine has been run twenty-six and threefourths days, and has spaded one hundred and sixty acres, or within a fraction of six acres a day; in fact, so near that it might be called six

acres.

SMALL FOUR-HORSE SPADER. This spader is twenty-one inches in diameter, has ten forks with five tines each. Being less in diameter, the motion is about one-fifth quicker than the large spader, and having less tines, it apparently works with less power. In every respect, this is the best machine, and the one to be adopted for general use. The team attached to these machines traveled at the rate of two and three-cighths miles an hour, which will give, for ten hours work, something over the six acres; but there is always a loss of time in turning and stoppages, and the only safe way to get at the amount of work done is as stated above, taking the performance of several days. To plow an acre with furrow slice of one foot, requires eight and a fourth miles of travel, just about what a good team will average in half a day; in fact, unless the lands are half a mile long, they will but seldom accomplish this amount, and oftener plow three-fourths of an acre in half a day of five hours. It will be seen that the teams alluded to traveled sixteen and a half miles a day, besides passing around the ends of the lands and in going to and from their work. We think this a good average day's work, full as much as can be expected of any good team. A team hauling a load on a solid road will travel more
