TABLE VII-SCHEDULED ADDITIONS TO ELECTRIC GENERATING CAPACITY BASED ON SCHEDULED DATES OF COMMERCIAL OPERATION AS OF APRIL 1, 1970 In Terms of Manufacturers' Ratings of the Units The accompanying Table VIII shows the number and aggregate capacity of thermal generating units in the expansion program (Table VII) divided according to size range. It is significant to note from this tabulation that 118 units totaling 105.2 million kilowatts, or 56.6 percent of all the new thermal gen. erating capacity on order and scheduled for service as of April 1, 1970, are in unit sizes of 700,000 kw and larger. In sizes of 500,000 kw and larger, the aggregate capacity represents 77.4 percent of the total capacity shown. Among the units under 100,000 kw, there are 34 steam turbine-generators, one of which is nuclearfired, with an aggregate capacity of 1.4 million kw, 191 gas turbine-generators aggregating 5.5 million kw, and 10 diesel engine-generators, 4,000 kw and larger, totaling 0.1 million kw. The number and aggregate capacity of new thermal and hydraulic generating units 4,000 kw and larger, placed in commercial operation in the contiguous United States during the years 1960 through 1969, and those now scheduled for operation in 1970 and later years, including those placed in commercial operation during the first three months of 1970, are shown in Fig. 7.
