To the Freshman just entering college, the phrase "College Spirit" that he hears so often is apt to be little more than a synonym for cheering at games and contributing to the support of athletics. This, indeed, is frequently, and rightly, the manifestation of college spirit, but the reality is of far deeper significance. He alone can know the reality who feels himself a part of the college, who feels her victories, her defeats, her life as his own. Nor is this feeling to be acquired simply by long residence. It comes only to him who has devoted his best energies to her cause. Only by doing his utmost for the college can a man know her spirit.

Freshman, be a college man. Remember that education is something broader than facts and books. Find something you can do in the world of college activities, and stick to it till you succeed. The athletic teams, the musical clubs, debating, all offer opportunities for your energies. Do you think that these things are only for the college genius? Not so. It is not the clever man, but the hard, earnest worker who will succeed. A man who will do something, whatever his abilities, is worth two who can and will not. Be a college man. Trite advice, perhaps, but advice that cannot be too often given. Only by following it can a man come to know fully and truly the meaning of college

spirit.
