powerful motor than otherwise and thus a motor of 44 or better 41⁄2 inch bore and a pretty long stroke would be desirable. In buying such a car you should inform the manufacturer as to the altitude at which it will be operated and the high price and scarcity of gasoline so that he may install as economical a carburetor as possible, and fit it with any attachments required to facilitate its operation at such altitudes.

No. 1216.-I have a motor cycle equipped with magneto ignition. When I advance the spark to the limit the motor loses power. What is the probable cause of this?-Dayton, Ind.

The spark advance should be increased proportionately to the speed of the motor and if the load on the motor is so great that it does not speed up when the throttle is opened, any considerable advance of the spark causes combustion in the cylinders to take place too long before the piston reaches the top of its stroke and a portion of the energy of the gasoline is converted into back work which tends to make the motor revolve in the direction opposite to that in which it is turning, thus reducing its effective output. When the motor is pulling hard and you advance the spark to the limit this result probably follows and a little less spark advance will generally give you more power when you are climbing a hill or the engine is working hard for any other cause. On a smooth, level road the motor will speed up readily with any opening of the throttle and you can, in general, use all the spark advance you have. to increase the speed without causing any falling off of the power. Too great spark advance is usually indicated by the knocking of the motor when the throttle is opened suddenly or when the motor is pulling hard. It may be that your magneto is so geared to the motor that there is too much spark advance provided and if this is the case the magneto should be retimed and less spark advance provided. This can be done by changing the mesh of the gears which drive the magneto by the amount of one tooth, the magneto being turned back relatively to the motor.

No. 1218.-When I start my motor from a cold condition it very often stops after running a very little while and the only way I can keep it going is to use the air shut-off which is provided in connection with the carburetor. Closing this three or four times causes the motor to continue to run, but unless I do this it "dies." This trouble has only appeared since cold weather has set in.-Effingham, Kan.

We know of no way in which this difficulty can be entirely avoided so long as the gasoline obtainable is as dense and involatile as it is at present. The coldness of the fuel and its heavy character combine to reduce the amount thereof which passes through the spraying nozzle and to cause it to condense in the intake pipe and cylinders rather than to gasify. We think possibly that now cold weather has come on, you may find it desirable slightly to open the needle valve of your carburetor or to strengthen the spring of the low speed adjustment so as to get a somewhat richer mixture at starting and we suggest that you start the motor with the air shut-off entirely closed and gradually open it as the motor begins to get warm rather than opening it all at once. You will probably do well to keep the fan belt off its pulley, except for long and hard runs, and when you start it cover the radiator front with several thicknesses of heavy carriage robe and keep them in place until the circulating water begins to become well warmed up.

THE BATTERY

IN YOUR ELECTRIC CAR

There are many good makes of electric cars-both commercial and pleasure. But the reliability of any electric car to a great degree depends upon the battery used. The power, mileage, hill climbing ability, cost of charging, reliability under various weather conditions-these are questions that relate to the battery.

Therefore when purchasing an electric car or renewing a battery, it is most important that the battery question be given very careful consideration.

Here are four electric vehicle batteries which give a satisfactory service that is not approached by any other battery. They are the

“Ironclad-Exide,” the “Exide,” the “Hycap= Exide," and the "Thin-Exide.”

Here Are Reasons That Will Appeal

1. The leading electric vehicle makers have for years and are to-day using "Exide" Batteries. Their opinions are worth while they know the importance of the battery.

2. "Exide "Batteries are manufactured by the oldest and largest battery maker in the country— with 24 years of battery building experience.

3. "Exide Batteries have been and are so successful that they are used in over 90% of all Electric pleasure vehicles manufactured.

4.

"Exide" Batteries give more miles with less expense, less attention and with greater continuity of service than any other batteries made. They never "stall" on hills nor in starting heavy loads.

5. A service organization, including 14 Sales Offices, 9 Exide" Depots and 863 Distributing Points, enable Exide" users to readily secure prompt and reliable service.

Each of the four "Exide" Batteries is adapted to a particular service. The experience of this company is at the service of electric vehicle users to aid them in choosing the proper type of battery, and to supply any battery help or information that is desired.
